In attendance at the ceremony were Professor Wang Tianyi, CEO of Everbright International, Mr. He Kebin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Dean of the School of Environment of Tsinghua University, Mr. Guan Yafeng, Chief Analyst of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mr. Wang Ande, Director of Shandong Environmental Protection Bureau, Mr. Wang Yajun, School Party Secretary of QUT, Mr. Tan Xiusen, President of QUT, Mr. Han Shouxin, Vice Secretary-in-chief of Qingdao Municipal Government, among others. They also inaugurated the Institute. In addition, Mr. Cai Shuguang, Special Assistant to CEO of Everbright International and General Manager of Everbright Envirotech (China) Limited, and Mr. Tao Junjie, General Manager of the Environmental Management Department of Everbright International, attended the event.
The Institute, jointly established by Everbright International and QUT, commands an investment of RMB15 million. Specifically, Everbright International will invest in cash for a 70% stake in the Institute, while QUT will invest with intangible assets (patents) in consideration of a 30% stake. Building its business on high-standard dioxin testing, the Institute will be committed to developing into a national examination and testing authority and creating an internationally-advanced national platform that integrates testing services, technology R&D, technological consultation and social services in the environmental sector. The Institute is the first dioxin testing and control engineering research center in Shandong Province. As such, it will draw upon advantages to broaden and deepen its business scope, in an effort to become a world-class environmental technology research platform.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Professor Wang Tianyi, CEO of Everbright International, said: "The Everbright-QUT Research Institute of Environmental Technology will serve the development needs of Everbright International, enrich QUT’s science and engineering disciplines, and support the training of talent for both parties. With an aim to serve the ecological progress of China and support the development of the "Belt and Road" initiative, the Institute strives to explore a market-oriented development path with strong technological, research, servicing and profit-making capabilities, and to become a successful demonstration of the industrial-academic collaboration model. The high-standard dioxin testing will not only serve Everbright International’s core business to ensure high-quality operation of its waste-to-energy projects, but also provide services to external parties. At the same time, the Institute will carry out research and development of online detection technology on dioxin and relevant equipment. Based on the cooperation, Everbright International will continue broadening the cooperation with QUT, tap the potential for cooperation, integrate resources between both parties, achieve complementary advantages, and pursue win-win development." In his speech, Professor Wang also welcomed graduates from QUT to join Everbright International and pointed out that the Group will always promote talent retention by giving every employee a career instead of a job, by building a family instead of just offering a place to work, and by providing satisfying benefits instead of basic salary.
In the speech, Professor Tan Xiusen, President of QUT, said, "The cooperation with Everbright International to establish the Institute is a proactive attempt for the school in implementing the industrial-academic collaboration model. By leveraging this technology research platform jointly established by Everbright International, the school will encourage the implementation and commercialisation of its science research results, which is an important way to enhance the strength of its relevant disciplines and to boost the organic growth of the school. We believe that with the joint efforts of both sides, and through the sincere and close cooperation, the Institute will bear fruitful results."
Wang Ande, Director of Shandong Environmental Protection Bureau, said in the speech during the signing ceremony, "With more than ten years of development, Everbright International has grown into Asia’s largest and the world’s second largest waste-to-energy investor and operator. It is also one of the top investors and operators in the areas of water treatment, integrated biomass utilisation and hazardous waste treatment, as well as a major waste incineration equipment manufacturer, in China. The Group has made a significant contribution to the environmental protection industry in Shandong Province. QUT is the first university in the province to establish an environmental engineering discipline, which possesses unique characteristics in environmental energy. The partnership is of strategic importance for promoting the development of China’s environmental protection industry and dioxin testing services, and will help to promote the coordinated development of economy, society and environment of Shandong Province. Shandong Environmental Protection Bureau will further increase its support and provide services in terms of policy support, financial subsidy, technological innovation, among others."
At the signing ceremony, Professor Wang Tianyi issued the appointment letters to Academician He Kebin and Analyst Guan Yafeng, who are appointed the Director and Deputy Director of the Academic Committee of the Institute respectively.
A high-profile environmental technology academic forum was held following the signing ceremony. Academician He Kebin, Analyst Guan Yafeng and Professor Bi Xuejun, Dean of the School of Environment of QUT, delivered remarkable academic presentations respectively at the forum.
